Police state and axis of evil member, the DPRK, has once again used the American Memorial Day holiday to defy the world and successfully test a small nuclear device.

Political, economical and strategic analysts are attempting to understand the purpose of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s actions and several synopses have arisen which challenge the Obama Doctrine. The secretive communist country, also called the hermit nation because of its world isolation, has once again chosen a day of remembrance in America to gain world attention. The rouge state and its leader, Kim Jong Il, have successfully placed the Korean Peninsula on the front pages of world newspapers.

North Korea’s Nuclear Bomb

The bomb detonated technically wasn’t a bomb. Intelligence agencies call it a “Nuclear Device.” Reuters reported yesterday, “The North's nuclear arms program…has not yet shown it can build an effective bomb….” The device was a huge object complete with cables, wires and numerous accessories necessary to initiate the sequence of events for detonation.

Nuclear Delivery Systems

Once the DPRK masters the technology to place the device in an independent container, they must also develop a method to deliver the bomb to target. The defector son in law of Prime Minister Il, Kang Myong Do, told the Washington Post in a July 28th 2004 interview, that the Pyongyang regime “…does not yet have a delivery system to use them [nuclear bombs] as weapons.”

  • Navy – North Korea has a small brown water navy operating within the 30 mile exclusion zone that consists of gunboats, 3 frigates and several small submarines. Military analysts consider this an unlikely delivery method.

  • Missiles – Reuters continued, weapons experts say North Korea “…cannot miniaturize a nuclear weapon to mount on a missile and would need a significant amount of testing to master the technology.”

  • Bombers – DPRK leaders know, “its Soviet-era bombers would not be able to evade the advanced air forces of the United States, Japan and South Korea to deliver a bomb, which means it may be many years before North Korea can actually threaten the world with a nuclear weapon,” claims Reuters.

Kim Jong Il’s Goal

Intelligence analysts believe there are 3 possible reasons for North Korean defiance of the Obama Doctrine.

  • Political Posturing – In Coral Bell’s book Negotiate From Strength: A Study in the Politics of Power, “When nations negotiate, they must be strong. Strength comes from the image the government projects… [and] the position they make…. [That] determines the outcome of negotiations.” Admiral Mike Mullen, said on CNN’s American Morning, “…the apparent test showed that Pyongyang was becoming increasingly belligerent.” Image! David Cloud of Politico reported yesterday, “The test was further evidence that North Korea has little intention of cooperating with Obama's…agenda….” Positioning!

  • Regime Continuity – Leader Kim, 67, suffered a stroke in August 2008 and intelligence confirms that his 25-year-old son, Kim Jong-un, will be named heir to North Korea. Ken E. Gause, senior analyst at CAN, reported on NPR May 1st that “…whether Jang Song-taek [Kim’s brother-in-law] will continue to support Kim Jong-un, shift his allegiance back to Kim Jong-nam [Kim's oldest son], or move to take the leadership mantle for himself…is anyone's guess.” Gause believes the current tests are to strengthen one position.

  • Currency through Proliferation – is the most feared possibility for Western nations. Cash strapped North Korea would sell nuclear material or expertise to Al Qaeda, Iran or the Taliban in Afghanistan. Con Coughlin of Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported, “Iranian scientists have already been invited to Pyongyang to study data collected from the test.”

Dr. Graham Allison, professor of government at the Harvard Kennedy School argued in his paper, Hold North Korea Accountable for Its Nuclear Arms, “Could North Korea's leader…sell Osama bin Laden a nuclear weapon or fissile material…? Yes! Has the North Korean government thought about selling a nuclear weapon? Again, the answer is yes.” If true, the Obama Doctrine will need help!
